Athletics

Supporting university athletics is a vital part of the Southern Miss experience. With a combined 16 athletic teams competing in Conference USA, our student-athletes are continuously successful on the field and inside the classroom. As a Southern Miss student you will have the opportunity to attend any athletic home game for free. As an added bonus, students are also allowed to purchase discounted tickets for away games.

There is no doubt that football is one of the most popular sports here at Southern Miss. Since joining Conference USA in 1995, the Golden Eagle football team has received much national attention for winning several conference championships, advancing to many post season bowl games, and compiling consecutive winning seasons.

Several Southern Miss athletes have also gone on to succeed at the next level by making a name for themselves in professional sports. Some of the current stars include: Brett Favre of the New York Jets; Adalius Thomas of the New England Patriots, Michael Boley of the Atlanta Falcons, and Chad Bradford of the Baltimore Orioles, just to name a few. Former stars include: legendary punter Ray Guy, who played with the Oakland Raiders; Sammy Winder, who played with the Denver Broncos; Louis Lipps, who played for the Pittsburg Steelers; and Clarence Weatherspoon, who played several years in the NBA.

There are many traditions associated with athletics. The Eagle Walk is a celebration of the spirit of Southern Miss football. On game day, a cannon is shot and a walk is made from The District to The Rock. The Pride of Mississippi Marching Band, cheerleaders, Southern Misses, Dixie Darlings, and more cheer their Golden Eagles to victory. Once the Eagle Walk is over, go back to The District and tailgate with your friends and family. Is baseball more your sport? During the baseball season, game-day festivities take place in Pete Taylor Park's Right Field Roost. Students and community members enjoy the excitement that only watching the game from the "Roost" can bring. You can learn more on athletics at www.southernmiss.com.
